Staring down the Goliaths of the Global Market

Man staring down the barrel of a gun

If you have watched the financial news over the last few weeks, you would be forgiven for feeling like you are standing on a battlefield.

Between surging global energy tensions, the drumbeat of inflation, massive tech volatility, and unpredictable geopolitical unrest, the headlines are shouting at us daily. For the everyday investor, these macroeconomic threats loom incredibly large. They are the modern-day Goliaths of our financial lives—intimidating, loud, and constantly threatening to crush our peace of mind and our portfolios.

When the Israelite army faced the actual Goliath in the Valley of Elah (1 Samuel 17), their reaction was entirely human: they were "dismayed and greatly afraid." Goliath taunted them for forty days, paralyzing them with fear. Today, the 24/7 news cycle acts much like that giant, hurling daily taunts that tempt us to abandon our strategies, panic sell, and run for the hills.

David versus Goliath

But the story of Defeating Goliath isn't about the size of the giant; it’s about the focus of the shepherd boy. When David stepped onto the battlefield, he brought timeless principles that we can apply to our stewardship and investing today:

  • He Ignored the Noise: David didn't listen to the fearful chatter of the soldiers or the insults of the giant. In volatile markets, investors must tune out the sensationalized media noise and focus on their long-term financial plans. Panic is contagious, but peace is a choice.

  • He Refused Ill-Fitting Armor: King Saul tried to weigh David down with heavy, cumbersome armor that wasn't built for him. In the financial world, this is the equivalent of chasing the latest investment fad or making panicked moves based on what someone else is doing. Stick to the diversified, solid strategy built specifically for your goals.

  • He Picked Smooth Stones: David went to the brook and chose five smooth stones—simple, tested, and effective. For the Christian investor, our "smooth stones" are the fundamentals: patience, diversification, historical market perspective, wise counsel, and, most importantly, prayer.

  • He Remembered Who Was Ultimately in Control: David’s confidence wasn’t in his slingshot; it was in the sovereignty of God. "The battle is the Lord's," he declared.

Good stewards using wisdom

We cannot control the price of oil, the decisions of the Federal Reserve, or the unrest overseas. Markets will always have seasons of calamity, and the giants of uncertainty will always raise their voices.

However, as stewards of the resources God has entrusted to us, we are called to operate out of wisdom, not fear. We plan diligently, we invest prudently, and then we rest in the promise of Philippians 4:7—allowing the peace of God, which transcends all ( market ) understanding, to guard our hearts and our minds through Christ Jesus.

The giants are loud right now, but they do not have the final say. Stay the course, keep your faith grounded, and let's face the giants together!

God Bless you all

With Love,

Dave
