Defeating Goliath: Aligning Finances with Your Faith
Believe it or not, the Bible talks about diversified investments! Ecclesiastes 11:2 says, “Divide your portion to seven, or even to eight, for you do not know what misfortune may occur on the earth.” This is similar to that old country saying, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” When your basket is dropped, every egg is compromised. Even with this very well-known advice, I still see people refuse to diversify their investments, which is crazy to me. Avoid risk, avoid disaster, and diversify your assets and your income.
How do we do this? There are many ways to do this, the easiest is simply to diversify your Stock/bond portfolio. This can be done through traditional mutual funds, ETFs, SMA’s, and other market-based products between stocks, bonds, and alternatives within a portfolio. Today’s technology makes diversification easier than ever before. “A little bit of money in a lot of different places” is the goal. If you want to take things a step further, you can look at purchasing real estate or other business ventures.
Imagine having multiple sources of income, take a look at this example:
1- Your job pays you an $80,000 Salary
2- Your investment portfolio of $100k creates $5,000 of income annually
3- Your rental property after it pays all expenses provides you an extra $5,000 a year plus
other people are paying the mortgage for you (Asset Appreciation- your $220k home increases in value over 15 years to $350k, and someone else pays the mortgage)
4- A hobby like raising chickens where you can sell eggs and have a ton of deductions
allowing you to net more of your earned income.
The Lord diversifies us too as believers. Genesis 1:27 states that God created the human race in his image, making them male and female, and therefore diverse in gender. The Bible also says that diversity in the body of Christ glorifies God and is a result of pursuing unity that also glorifies God. Unity and diversity Ephesians 4:1-16 says that unity and diversity in God's church are inseparable and that unity expresses God's purpose for the church. John 17:21 also mentions Jesus' prayer to the Father
for all believers to be one, he and the Father are one.
This fundamental redemptive equality is well expressed in Galatians 3:28, where the apostle writes, " There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Again, the blessedness of multicultural reconciliation does not mean obliterating cultural distinctions. I have sat through all kinds of church services. First, being raised in an Orthodox Church. I have been to Catholic services, Baptist churches, Calvary Chapel teachings, and sat in churches in the middle of the Zambian Bush. The Lord loves diversification! The Lord loves how different people and cultures celebrate and praise the name of Jesus. But in all of this diversification, there
is unity in God's unfaultable word. As long as you stay faithful to God’s word, I believe He loves the different styles of praise and worship. Read Galatians 3:28 again, There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." We are all so different but united as one in Christ Jesus. He diversifies us and at the same time, He brings us together. In Jesus name!
God Bless you all
With Love,
Dave
