Welcome back to this new blog, so grateful for all of the positive feedback on
social media!
Today, I wanted to discuss chasing things. Chasing the things of this world;
money, cars, big houses, boats, luxury, success, fame, and anything else that shifts
the focus from The Lord to these items that become your god (lowercase g).
There is nothing wrong with wanting nice things. Working hard to provide for your
family, having a nice home, a nice car, going on vacations, and becoming
financially successful. None of it is sin, in and of itself. It becomes sin when it
takes over as your god. When the focus of your life shifts from Jesus to these
earthly items.
Here is the thing; I have sat across from dozens of people in my twenty-year career
who have all of these earthly items. They have the beautiful cars, the million million-dollar homes but they don’t have a relationship with The Lord. Because they have
replaced Our Heavenly Father with these items they lack joy. They constantly go
from “thing to thing” in search of completion, but they leave with a hole in their
heart and soul that only Jesus can fill.
Let’s look quickly at the parable of the Rich Fool:
Luke 12:13- The Parable of the Rich Fool
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the
inheritance with me.”
Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between
you?”
15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of
greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
16 And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an
abundant harvest.
17 He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to
store my crops."
18 “Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger
ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. 19 And I’ll say to myself, “You have
plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from
you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?"
21 “This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not
rich toward God.”
The United States is the wealthiest country in the world and yet why such a high
suicide rate? How can this be, why is this? We have all of the possessions, the
“things”, and yet so many people are battling depression and thoughts of ending
their lives.
A life without a focus on God is in vain. King Solomon tells us in Ecclesiastes 1,
how everything under the sun is meaningless.
Ecclesiastes 1
The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem:
2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!”
Says the Teacher.
“Utterly meaningless!
Everything is meaningless.”
Financially, I always tell my clients, save for tomorrow but live for today. Finding
the balance between the two can be challenging at times. Stay focused on your
relationship with Jesus. Pray and lean in on what The Holy Spirit will guide you to
do and you will never have to worry about a thing, stay in His Will.
As we celebrate Jesus’ death and Resurrection during this Easter Season let us
please keep Him at the center of our prayer and warship. Enjoying the wonderful
things of this world can be just fine, but let’s not forget to focus on the one who
gave us everything, The Alpha & The Omega, The First & Last, Jesus Christ.
Happy Easter to you all!
