Navigating the Labyrinth of points

Travel Credit Cards for Every Explorer

Travel broadens the mind, but navigating the world of travel credit cards can feel like exploring uncharted territory. Believe me, this is one of the most misunderstood areas of planning. It's tough, you have to think about a ton of things before you make the conscious decision to move forward with a credit card program. You'll want to consider things like spending habits, places you use your card, what you want to get out of the points or airline miles, and any annual or redemption fees a program may charge.  Fear not, intrepid adventurers! This guide will equip you with the knowledge to choose the card that unlocks the most doors – or airport lounges, as it were.

Airline Cards:

Soaring through the skies with an airline-specific card can reap rich rewards. Frequent flyers enjoy perks like:

  • Bonus miles: Earn extra miles on every flight with your chosen airline, often doubling or tripling your usual haul.

  • Free checked bags: Say goodbye to baggage fees and hello to extra legroom for souvenirs. Baggage fees are a paint point for me personally especially when you have to justify bringing on more bags just to pass a checkpoint. Doesn't 100 lbs in one bag versus 50 lbs in two bags equal the same? Arguably, it's more hassle and storage for two bags. If that's what they want, that's what they'll get. Know the rules and use them to your advantage when planning your trip.

  • Airport lounge access: Escape the terminal chaos and relax in a swanky lounge with Wi-Fi, snacks, and refreshments.

Top picks:

  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card: Rack up bonus miles, enjoy unlimited lounge access, and even get a Delta Sky Club® membership. One of my all-time favorite cards as a loyal Delta flyer. Not always 100% in love with the way things work out, but by far my favorite airline because of the access to a variety of flight options and it's global partnerships.

  • United Clubâ„  Infinite Card: Lounge access, priority boarding, and a free Global Entry or TSA PreCheck® application fee make this card a jet-setter's dream.

  • Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card: Earn Companion Pass points and enjoy two free roundtrips each year (restrictions apply), making budget travel a breeze.

Hotel Cards:

For globetrotters who prefer a comfy bed to a cramped airplane seat, hotel cards offer a luxurious escape. Expect:

  • Free nights: Earn points toward free stays at hotel chains, turning points into pampering vacations.

  • Elite status: Unlock upgraded rooms, early check-in, and other perks that make every stay feel first-class.

  • Restaurant & spa credits: Indulge in culinary delights and spa treatments without blowing your travel budget.

Top picks:

  • Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card: Earn free nights and elite status at Marriott hotels, plus enjoy automatic elite status after spending $30,000 in a year.

  • Hilton Honors Surpass® Card: Get free weekend nights, automatic Hilton Honors Silver status, and resort credits for spa treatments or dining.

  • World of Hyatt Credit Card: Unlock free nights, automatic Hyatt Discoverist status, and enjoy a $100 annual restaurant credit at Hyatt hotels.

Maximizing Points:

Not all spending habits are created equal. Choose a card that rewards your lifestyle:

  • Travelholics: Cards like Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card offer flexible points that can be redeemed for travel booked through the platform, transferred to airline or hotel partners, or used for cash back.

  • Foodies: American Express® Gold Card or Citi Premier® Card shower you with bonus points on dining and restaurant spending.

  • Everyday heroes: Chase Freedom Unlimited® or Capital One SavorOne Cash Back Credit Card rewards all your purchases, turning everyday spending into travel adventures.

Remember:

  • Annual fees: Weigh the benefits against the annual fee for each card.

  • Creditworthiness: Maintain good credit to qualify for the best cards.

  • Read the fine print: Understand bonus categories, blackout dates, and other restrictions before applying.

With this knowledge, you're ready to conquer the credit card jungle and discover rewards that fuel your wanderlust. Happy travels!
